One thing is clear: we live in a VUCA world filled with Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. It can seem daunting at times, and even cause paralysis in the face of constant obstacles. But there is a “get out of jail” card. Based on in-depth longitudinal research and indisputable scientific evidence, the secret is to live a purposeful life in an active way.
In a recent presentation, I heard Richard Leider, life coach and bestselling author of countless books on the power of purpose (see http://amzn.to/2ghjrnw), state that “purpose is about compassion in action”. As the Millennial generation fully understands, focusing on living true to your core purpose is a lifelong task from cradle to grave. This is the one thing that will provide you with vitality as you age, and as well as day-to-day fulfillment. As Richard professes, “enjoyment is NOT the opposite of work and success”. Quite the contrary – enjoyment is the very element that will allow you to thrive.
Begin by understanding what is your calling. Answer for yourself two key questions: (1) Are you aware that you have real gifts that are not being expressed; and (2) on a scale of 1-10, what is the likelihood that you will fully express these gifts before you die. As business leaders, you need to understand what you stand for, what you won’t stand for, and who you will stand with to accomplish great things. Once we know these things, we can treat purpose as a practice and daily exercise to guide our actions and provide a rich sense of fulfillment.
“Every day, I am torn between saving the world and savoring the world”
– E. B. White
Understanding your core purpose is a very individual thing. However, Richard Leider believes universally, each of us is driven by the need to “grow and give”. As we explore new things, we grow. As we express compassion for others, and dedicate ourselves to making a difference in the world, we give back. Choose to grow and give, and reap the rewards these actions provide! Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and New Year.
