Priorities drive everything! Big companies, small companies, solo entrepreneurs…we all are driven by priorities.
It’s based on the fundamental knowledge that we can’t do everything all at once (although owners would like to.)
So as you lead an organization, what happens when you come back all pumped up from a learning event…a weekend, a vacation reading a book, listening to a business expert…with a bunch of new ideas? Do you set direction by simply adding to the list of priorities for the team?
Nick Tasler writes about this challenge in his recent book, “Why Quitters Win.” http://www.nicktasler.com/author/
Nick’s work with companies large and small has unearthed the sinister and degenerative effect of the ‘piling on’ of new (and sometimes even superior) priorities to the working team. I used to work for a guy who would read something that struck a chord and by Monday, our corporate direction had changed. Frustrating to say the least…and at its worst, some wouldn’t respond because they knew that “This too will pass.”
Mencius (c. 372—289 B.C.E.) was a Confucian philosopher who said, “Only when there are things a man will not do is he capable of doing great things.”
Consciously determine what you will NOT do. Quit something. Leave it behind. Decide. https://hbr.org/2013/08/to-move-ahead-you-have-to-know-what-to-leave-behind
It will free you to fully focus on what you have decided to do!
